Prom: What’s it all about?

Prom is the one night of high school that both local and exchange students alike dream about. Short in English for the word “Promenade”—a noun that means to show yourself in a public place to meet or be seen by others—American high school Proms are just that: an occasion to get dressed up, socialize with your best friends and dance the night away. We broke down this tradition into three parts: the weeks leading up Prom, the hours before the event and the actual dance itself. Weeks before: the Promposal

Much of the Prom excitement comes in figuring out who you are going to attend the dance with: your date! In the past it was typical for the boy to ask the girl out, yet these days Promposals come in all forms. Whether it’s a group of friends going together or someone asking out their BFF, a Promposal often means surprising your date with a sign, balloons, flowers or a little gift. Paint a big poster, decorate your backyard with twinkly lights or write on the driveway with sidewalk chalk – this is your time to get creative!

Hours before: getting ready

The hours leading up to Prom are about more than just putting on your newly bought tux or gown. Your group of friends will all meet at somebody’s house where you’ll exchange a corsage and boutonniere with your date. The corsage is a bouquet of flowers for the girl to wear around her wrist; the boutonniere is a matching bouquet for the boy to wear pinned to his dress jacket. Once you secure some perfect Instagram shot, you and your Prom crew will head to the dance together. Some groups pile into their own cars, while others may splurge on a limousine or party-bus. However you roll up to the dance, you better have your party shoes on!

The evening of: dancing the night away

Every high school Prom is different. Some have themes (Masquerade Ball, Fairytale Land or Blast from the Past), some are held in fancy venues (a sports stadium, a banquet hall or a hotel ballroom) and some simply consist of your high school gymnasium covered in streamers and a disco ball. Oftentimes there is a station where you and your date can pose for photos and there is always a DJ mixing beats on the dance floor. At some high schools across the USA you can vote for a Prom King and Queen. In fact, many exchange students are often deemed Prom Royalty, so don’t be surprised if you earn yourself a crown and sash!
